Dynamic Range Compressor - Single band

Preliminary

The Dynamic Range Compressor belongs to automatic level control algorithm class’. It is used during the sound playback allowing to reduce the difference between high and low level audio signals. Then, after amplification, the sound intensity of the compressed audio signal is higher while preventing clipping effects.

This type of functionality can be useful in many situations. For example, for a MP3 player, if the user is listening to music in a noisy environment, he has to raise the sound level for hearing the music details. But it can damage his eardrum. The DRC will enable to hear those details without changing the sound level.

For an easiest use of this effect, Dolphin Integration offers the DRC together with the audio CODEC as a whole Virtual Component (ViC) of Silicon IP.

The FlexAudio Architecture grants a fully integrated sub-system with all IR-drop issues treated.

DRC Key Benefits

  • Higher sound power perceived thanks to automatic handling of signal dynamic range
  • Downward compression: the level of loud sounds is reduced while the level of quiet sounds remains unchanged
  • Easiest integration: Thanks to its integration inside the audio sub-system, no need for particular knowledge in algorithm, RTL coding or DSP coding

DRC Features

  • DRC single band
  • Parameters:
    • choice of the activation compression threshold: [-30 ; 0] dB
    • choice of the noise gate threshold: [-80 ; -40] dB
    • choice of the gain ratio in the compression zone: [1:1 ; 256:1]
    • Post compressor gain level: [-20 ; 20] dB
  • Option: soft clipping for a smooth limitation of the high level signals

Equalizer - Various configurations

The sound mastering in any application is now a must have for most of device makers. For sound enhancement, multiple effects exist, but they are associated to the painful step of programming. For an easiest use of these effects, Dolphin Integration offers an implementation within the audio CODEC.

The integration is smoother and no C-like programming or algorithm implementation are required, neither for SoC integrators nor for their customers.

One of these effects, equalization, gives depth and relief to music and allows the end user to adapt the distribution of volume to the type of music being listened to. It is widely used during the sound playback.

Key Benefits of Equalizer

  • During the playback
    • compensate the transfer function of the environment (the speaker, cables, drivers etc.)
    • reinforce the sound to make it fit to the listener convenience
    • Depending on the use for the equalizer, various adjustments are possible: number of bands and parametric option
      • 5 bands suits for audio rendering and can be set-up easily
      • 10 bands suits for transfer function compensation and enable
        • the finest tuning
        • pre-settings for the best use by the final user
  • Easiest integration thanks to the GDS II level, no need for particular knowledge in algorithm, RTL coding or DSP programming

Sample Rate Converter SRC-ARR

Sample Rate Converter for digital audio data synchronization

High audio quality

schematics

Data synchronization may be a strong issue for system makers. It thus requires a wise thinking from Fabless providers for addressing system needs such as: audio / video synchronization, audio data flow adjustment for audio real-time streaming applications between asynchronous clock domain, while ensuring high sound quality. A lack of synchronization on the data interface might lead to a noise performance drop which can be audible.
Our audio converters dedicated to applications with such needs embed a SRC-ARR (Sample Rate Converter - Automatic Rate Recognition). This SRC is specifically dedicated to applications based on real-time streaming.

Targeted Application

  • Applications based on streaming
  • Audio Video synchronization
